Looking back now, I was a ‘game designer’ from an early age. By 10 years old I had turned our playtime games of ‘Kerbsy’ in our quiet suburban street, into a structured competition of championship belts and challenger’s rites (I was a big WWE fan at this time). By 14 I was an avid Games Workshop enthusiast and had taken mine and my friend’s Necromunda gangs through three home made ‘campaigns’ that involved custom models, rules and adapted game systems.
I had been playing games on my dad’s Atari 400 from a young age and he even programmed some himself for me to play. A summer trip to family in Canada caused my first contact with the Nintendo Entertainment System and the course of my eventual career was set from that point on.
November, 1995. I bought my first issue of EDGE magazine and discovered that there were people whose jobs it was to make these games that I loved. My entry level job in a QA department lead to a job at a developer, I eventually found my way into game design.
I love boardgames, I have collection of around 150. I have games that are best played on Sundays with friends who have a spare 4 hours. I have other games that can be played in 20 minutes with family and kids. I love the social element of playing games but I also love the design. Boardgames are crystal clear distillation of design. mechanics and theme.
I am also a Level 1 Crossfit Coach and a Level 1 Run Leader. I enjoy helping others achieve their goals by building systems and programs to get them there. I have found working with humility, kindness and empathy as a coach has helped my professional design work immensely.
